The W.H. Howell Foundry was established in Geneva, Illinois in 1867. They produced cast iron door stops and stove heated irons. In the 1920s they changed their product line to include steel-framed furniture as electronic irons took over the consumer market. They continued to produce the popular tubular furniture when it moved its operation to the former Cable Piano Company factory site in St. Charles in 1937.
During WW II, Howell made bombs and shells along with airplane wing sections and with the war ending went back to making their steel furniture. In 1954, Howell was bought by one of its suppliers, Acme Steel Company which later became Interlake.
They were one of the original companies to make metal gliders. This design is most likely early 1930s design, which pre-dates most of the gliders made by other companies such as Hettrick and Bunting.
